Small animals are remarkably efficient climbers but comparatively poor runners, a well-established phenomenon in locomotor energetics that drives size-related differences in locomotor ecology yet remains poorly understood. Here, I derive the energy cost of legged locomotion from two complementary components of muscle metabolism, Activation–Relaxation and Cross-bridge cycling. A mathematical model incorporating these costs explains observed patterns of locomotor cost both within and between species, across a broad range of animals (insects to ungulates), for a wide range of substrate slopes including level running and vertical climbing. This ARC model unifies work- and force-based models for locomotor cost and integrates whole-organism locomotor cost with cellular muscle physiology, creating a predictive framework for investigating evolutionary and ecological pressures shaping limb design and ranging behaviour.  相似文献

Coevolution of form and function inspires investigation of associations between morphological variation and the exploitation of specific ecological settings. Such relationships, based mostly on traits of external morphology, have been extensively described for vertebrates, and especially so for squamates. External features are, however, composed by both soft tissues and bones, and these likely play different biomechanical roles during locomotion, such as in the autopodia. Therefore, ecological trends identified on the basis of external morphological measurements may not be directly correlated with equivalent variation in osteology. Here, we investigate how refined parameters of autopodial osteology relate to ecology, by contrasting climbing and nonclimbing geckos. Our first step consisted of inferring how external and osteological morphometric traits coevolved in the group. Our results corroborate the hypothesis of coevolution between external and osteological elements in the autopodia of geckos, and provides evidence for associations between specific osteological traits and preferred locomotor habit. Specifically, nonclimbers exhibit longer ultimate and penultimate phalanges of Digit V in the manus and pes and also a longer fifth metatarsal in comparison with climbers, a pattern discussed here in the context of the differential demands made upon locomotion in specific ecological contexts. Studies of Río Negro subsistence farming and fishing activities are used to estimate the human carrying capacity for the region and the likely pattern of human land-use during prehistory. Ceramic evidence suggests human presence in the region more than 3000 years ago. Traditional farming is labor intensive and relatively unproductive. Nevertheless, farmers achieve an energy return of 15.21, and produce 2600 kcal per work hour. Fish are the major protein source, but fish catch per unit of effort and fish yield per hectare of floodplain are very low; fishermen are probably exploiting local fish resources very close to their limit. The low human population density would suggest that the Río Negro forest has been relatively undisturbed. Nevertheless, charcoal is widespread and abundant in forest soils. This charcoal is probably from anthropogenic or natural wildfires. These results suggest a much more complex history for Amazonia than previously thought.K. Because brachiating locomotion is characterized by a pattern of swinging movements, brachiation has often been analogized to pendular motion, and aspects of the mechanics of pendular systems have been used to provide insight into both energetic and structural design aspects of this locomotor mode. However, there are several limitations to this approach. First, the motions of brachiating animals only approximate pendular motion, and therefore the energetics of these two systems are only roughly comparable. Second, the kinematic similarity between brachiation and pendular motion will be maximal at only one velocity, and the correspondence will be even less at greater or lesser speeds. Third, all forms of terrestrial locomotion that involve the use of limbs incorporate elements of pendular systems, and therefore brachiation is not unusual in this respect. Finally, it has been suggested that the mechanics of pendular motion will constrain the maximum attainable body size of brachiating animals and that this mechanical situation explains the lack of brachiating primates of greater than 30-kg body size; the present analysis provides evidence that the constraints on body size are far less strict than previously indicated and that extrinsic factors such as the geometry of the forest environment are more likely to dictate maximum body size for brachiators.  相似文献

The urinary bladder depends on intracellular ATP for the support of a number of essential intracellular processes including contraction. The concentration of ATP is maintained constant primarily via the rapid transfer of a phosphate from creatine phosphate (CP) to ADP catalyzed by the enzyme creatine kinase (CK). Since muscular pathologies associated with diabetes are in part related to intracellular alterations in metabolism, we have characterized the CK activity in both skeletal muscle and urinary bladder from control and streptozotocin-diabetic rats.The following is a summary of the results: 1) Bladder tissue from control rats showed linear kinetics with a Vmax = 390 nmoles/mg protein/min, and a Km = 275 µM. 2) Urinary bladder tissue isolated from diabetic rats displayed biphasic kinetics with Vmax = 65 and 324 nmoles/mg protein/min, and Km's = 10 µM and 190 µM respectively. 3) Skeletal muscle isolated from control rats showed linear kinetics with an approximate Vmax of 800 nmoles/mg protein/min and a Km of 280 µM CP. 4) Homogenates of skeletal muscle from diabetic rats showed complex kinetics not separable into distict component forms. 5) The Km for ADP for both skeletal muscle and bladder was approximately 10 µM.These studies demonstrate that whereas bladders isolated from both control and diabetic rats possess a low-affinity isomer(s) of CK with similar maximum enzymatic activity, there is a high affinity isomer present within the urinary bladder muscle of diabetic rats that is not present in bladder tissue isolated from control rats. Skeletal muscle isolated from both diabetic and control rats exhibited a maximal activity 2 to 3 times higher than that of the bladder.  相似文献

本文在麻醉并制动的大鼠上观察了中缝背核(DR)条件刺激对由苔状和爬行纤维传入引起的小脑浦肯野细胞(PC)诱发反应的影响。主要结果有:(1)刺激大脑皮层感觉运动区可以引起苔状和爬行纤维向对侧小脑皮层第Ⅵ和Ⅶ小叶的传入,因而在该小叶上记录到 PC 的诱发简单锋电位(SS)和复杂锋电位(CS)反应,潜伏期分别是8—25和12—30ms。(2)以不影响PC 自发 SS 和 CS 活动的阈下强度刺激 DR,可显著地压抑 PC 对于刺激感觉运动皮层引起的苔状和爬行纤维兴奋所产生的诱发 SS 和 CS 反应,这种压抑作用可持续数百毫秒。(3)DR条件刺激对 PC 的诱发 SS 和 CS 反应的压抑作用可以被静脉注射5-HT 受体阻断剂羟甲丙基甲基麦角酰胺所减弱或阻断。上述结果表明 DR 的5-HT 能纤维传入可以降低苔状和爬行纤维对 PC 的突触作用效力,抑或降低 PC 对突触传入的反应敏感性,提示中缝-小脑5-HT,能纤维传入系统参与了小脑某些重要的神经活动过程。  相似文献

The population energetics of a temporary and a permanent pond population of Musculium partumeium in Southwest Ohio were studied. In the permanent pond (surface area = 396 m2, maximum depth = 0.7 m) the population was bivoltine and iteroparous whereas in the temporary pond (surface area = 1042 m2, maximum depth = 0.9 m) the population was usually univoltine and semelparous.Growth and biomass were assessed as total organic carbon and total nitrogen to provide estimates of productivity and seasonal changes in C:N for each generation. Productivity (non-respired assimilation = growth + reproduction; N-R.A. = G + R) was 6939 mgC·m–2·a–1 (3858 and 3353 mgC·m–2·a–1 for each generation) and 1661 mgC·m–2·a–1 for the permanent and temporary pond populations respectively. The average standing crop biomass (B) was 606.8 mgC·m–2 (357.5 and 249.3 mgC·m–2 for each generation) and 231.9 mgC·m–2 with overall productivity: biomass ratios of 11.4 and 7.2 for the permanent pond and temporary pond populations respectively.Respiration rates were converted to carbon equivalents (respired assimilation = R.A.) and used to evaluate the components of total assimilation (T.A. = R.A. + N-R.A.) and the efficiency of partitioning this energy to N-R.A. for G and R. When expressed as a percentage, the production efficiencies (100 × N-R.A.:T.A.) were 50.4 and 62%, and the reproductive efficiencies (100 × R:N-R.A.) were 26.4 and 18% for the permanent and temporary pond populations respectively. The reproductive efficiencies for populations of these viviparous clams are greater than those for most oviparous molluscs.The comparative information on the energetics of these populations does not completely fit any theoretical consideration of reproductive effort or life-history strategy. In ten 0.1 ha drainable ponds O+ cyprinids were stocked to assess their impact on the aquatic community. Bream and roach were stocked in early June, 1986, and carp in early July, 1986. The ponds were drained mid November, 1986. The relationship between the fish community and its food resource was estimated in terms of production and consumption with use of the data on growth and mortality of the fish. The average gross production of the fish species in the ten ponds (48.4 kg during the experiment) was dominated by the carp (58.5%). A minimum estimate of the food consumption of the O+ cyprinids is 760 kJ.m–2. The average production of bream and roach was much lower than that of carp due to a higher mortality and a more specialized feeding pattern. The gross productions of carp, bream and roach in the ten ponds were not significantly related, although stomach analysis showed diet overlap between the carp and the bream.  相似文献

Changes in the foraging behaviour due to variation in the body size of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus were investigated. All sizes of fish had a high probability of attacking prey whenever encountered. The probability of eating the prey increased with the size of the fish, as the larger fish had larger jaws and a greater stomach capacity. Therefore, as fish increased in size there was an increase in the probability of successful prey capture. The level of satiation did not have an effect on the prey handling time, which is contrary to other studies and is probably a result of the large prey sizes. The physical size of the prey meant that the handling times were long regardless of the motivational level of the fish. The larger fish took in more energy and at a faster rate, although the time to reach satiation was similar for all fish sizes. The advantage that large fish appear to have in successfully gaining large prey is negated by their greater metabolic requirement. The changes in feeding performance induced by small increases in body size could have important consequences for intraspecific competition, habitat Use and risk of predation.  相似文献
